Turns out, this was actually a bug in PHP8.0.0 and has been fixed in 8.0.2

I’ve put in a workaround for this bug, but it will mean that the emails are stuck in the mailbox, which is not great. Maybe a warning for that will be useful. @mariana this will be useful to add to the releasenotes of the next release.
