Best practice for phpList mailouts

I am contemplating installing phpList on my servers and wonder if anyone could tell me the best practice for sending out newsletters. Should I worry about the potential of having my IP blacklisted if I just use the default smtp parameters or should I be using the services of something like smtp2go?

I will not be sending out any spammy newsletters/campaigns but wonder if it best to use other smtp services rather than those on my servers. I have a smallish database of less than 1,000 subscribers.

@MarcPare I (and I would imagine others) have been using AWS along with the PHP plugin for mailouts. AWS is pretty much free, and sense you use their IP addresses, they are whitelisted. Just be sure you have a responsible email list.
